Fresh young cobnuts also know as Kentish cobs are green and golden, dewy green in colour and, as the season progresses, they grow gradually golden in colour. The flavour also alters from juicy and mildly coconutty to sweet and deeply nutty.

Cobnuts are a type of hazelnut traditionally grown in Kent and are delicious eaten alone. The more mature shells are tougher to crack, but both young and older nuts are really tasty. They roast well and are great baked into cakes or chopped in salads. Alternatively, do as the Victorians did, who considered Kentish cobnuts a delicacy to accompany an after-dinner glass of port. They're also very rich in vitamins b1 and b6
